Hiking Equipment Essentials for Your Hiking

What hiking equipment do I need? When you are planning your hiking trip an important aspect is having the right gear. Being unprepared or having the wrong equipment may result in disastrous consequences. However, it all depends on what type of trip you are going on.

Before you start going down to your local store and spending on what you think you might need, it all depends on what type of hiking trip you are planning. Common sense I know, but there is no need to buy an arctic jacket if you plan on a summer day hike.

Here are some of the basic essentials.

Hiking boots

In fact they are an essential part of your kit and should be at the top of the list. They will help to you protect your feet from blisters and keep them dry. With such a huge range available on the market, deciding on the best hiking boots for you will depend again on your trip.

Waterproof clothing

Another element is wearing suitable clothing especially if you are hiking in interchangeable weather conditions such as the UK. Even if you are just going on a day trip in the summer, much can change on higher ground. Therefore you should invest in waterproof clothing that is going to keep you warm and dry.

One mistake you want to avoid is wearing jeans. Of course we all love them, they are comfortable to wear, but on the mountainside they are not practical. With jeans, when it rains they soak up all the water, and thus not keeping you dry as well as restricting your movement.

Hiking backpack

Whether you are on a day’s trek or walking for a weekend, you will have to invest in a backpack. Obviously the length of the trip will determine how much you will have to take with you. So, bearing that in mind here are some guidelines on capacity.

  • Up to 3,000 cubic inches – Suitable for a day trip
  • 3,000-4,000 cubic inches – Suitable for a weekend trek
  • 5,000-6,000 cubic inches – Great for a week’s trip including camping gear

To make your trip rewarding and memorable it is vital that you invest in the right equipment that will suit your needs.
